MArch Architecture
About this course
Architecture is one of the most demanding and multifaceted creative professions. It requires the ability to design spaces that are functional, beautiful, structurally sound, environmentally responsible, and responsive to the needs of the people who will use them. Architects must draw on art and design, structural and environmental engineering, history and theory, materials science, and an understanding of the social and cultural contexts in which buildings exist. The training is long and rigorous, and professional registration requires sustained achievement across both academic and professional practice. At Robert Gordon University, the programme is a linked BSc and Master of Architecture award, running over six years full time and providing a continuous pathway from undergraduate to postgraduate study within a single institution. This structure is designed to give you a clear and well-supported route towards professional registration as an architect, avoiding the disruption of applying to a separate postgraduate programme. The programme includes a placement year with work placement opportunities, enabling you to gain professional experience within an architectural practice during your studies. You will develop skills in design, drawing, digital modelling, construction technology, environmental design, and architectural theory, building the full complement of capabilities that the profession demands. Graduates who complete the full linked award and the subsequent professional experience and examinations are eligible to register as architects with the Architects Registration Board. Architecture graduates work in private practice across all scales and specialisms, in the public sector, in urban design, in conservation, in project management, and in related fields including interior design, landscape architecture, and construction management. Some graduates go on to academic careers in architecture schools, combining practice with research and teaching.
