BEng Computer Science (with integrated year in industry)
About this course
Computer science is the study of computation in all its dimensions: the theoretical foundations of what can be computed and how, the practical methods of programming and software construction, and the systems and architectures through which computing is delivered at scale. It is a discipline that underpins much of modern life, from the software that runs on everyday devices to the infrastructure of the internet, financial systems, healthcare, and scientific research. Graduates who can analyse problems, design solutions, and implement them reliably in code are in demand across virtually every sector of the economy. This four-year, full-time programme at Aberystwyth includes an integrated year in industry, which gives you the opportunity to apply your computing skills in a real professional environment as part of the degree itself. The programme is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, on behalf of the Engineering Council, providing professional recognition that many employers value. You will develop skills in analysis, design, solution selection, and implementation, covering areas such as algorithms and data structures, software engineering, programming languages, databases, networks, and systems. The year in industry integrates professional experience directly into your academic formation, so that you return to your final year with practical knowledge that enriches your study and strengthens your employability. Computer science graduates are among the most sought-after in the graduate jobs market, with strong demand from technology companies, financial services, healthcare, government, and every other sector that depends on software and digital infrastructure. Common roles include software developer, systems analyst, data engineer, cybersecurity specialist, and technical project manager. The BCS accreditation supports professional development toward chartered IT professional status. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, or cybersecurity.
