BA Dance
About this course
Dance as a degree subject takes the art form seriously on its own terms, examining it as a creative, physical, and cultural practice with its own histories, techniques, and critical frameworks. At degree level, dance is not just about becoming a better performer: it is about developing as a reflective and creative artist who can make, analyse, and contextualise movement with genuine intellectual rigour. The discipline encompasses performance, choreography, improvisation, physical training, dance history, and the theoretical frameworks that allow you to understand what dance is doing in the world. At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time programme invites you to experiment, push boundaries, and explore your creative potential in performance and choreography alongside tutors who bring the latest teaching practices to their work. You will refine your technique and develop your theoretical knowledge in parallel, becoming both a more accomplished dancer and a more thoughtful and articulate one. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in the dance or creative industries and international exposure that broadens your artistic perspective before you graduate. Dance graduates go on to work as professional dancers, choreographers, dance teachers, community dance practitioners, arts administrators, and movement directors in theatre, film, and television. The physical intelligence, creative problem-solving, and collaborative skills that dance training develops are also valued in fields such as performing arts education, health and wellbeing, movement therapy, and creative leadership. Many graduates combine performance careers with teaching or community work, while others move into arts management, festival programming, or dance research. Postgraduate study in dance, choreography, or dance science is a natural route for those who want to develop their practice or move into education and research.
