About this course

Film is one of the defining art forms of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, a medium that combines narrative, image, sound, performance, and editing into an experience that can be simultaneously entertaining, politically provocative, aesthetically challenging, and emotionally powerful. Studying film at degree level develops both the critical capacity to analyse and interpret films and, in production-oriented programmes, the practical skills to make them. It is a discipline that takes cinema seriously as an object of study while connecting students to the industries and creative communities through which films are realised. At Middlesex University in London, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, which provides a supported entry route into the discipline for students who want to build their academic and creative foundations before progressing to the full honours programme. You will work with professional-level facilities and develop connections to London's film industry, one of the most active in the world and geographically close to the university. The programme develops both the critical and theoretical understanding of cinema and the practical skills of filmmaking, from script and pre-production through cinematography, direction, and editing to post-production and distribution. You will engage with film history and theory, examining how cinema has developed across different national traditions, genres, and movements. You will develop the capacity to think analytically about films, to produce your own work, and to understand the industry and craft context in which professional filmmaking operates. London's film community provides connections and opportunities that extend well beyond the campus. Graduates pursue careers in film production, as directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, and in post-production, as well as in television, documentary, advertising, and digital media. Critical and analytical skills also lead graduates into film journalism, programming, education, and cultural organisations. Many graduates continue to develop their practice through postgraduate study or by building careers within the creative industries.
