BA Music
About this course
Music at degree level is concerned with developing not only technical skill as a performer, producer, songwriter, or composer, but also the critical understanding of music as an art form, a cultural practice, and an industry. A music degree asks you to take your practice seriously as both a craft and an intellectual pursuit, reflecting on what you make and why, how it connects to broader musical traditions and contexts, and how the music industry operates around the work that artists produce. At Middlesex University, this part-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who are building the academic skills they need before entering the main degree. You will develop your skills as a producer, songwriter, composer, and performer, refining your musical identity over the course of the programme and gaining the technical and creative confidence to work across a range of musical contexts. The programme provides opportunities to perform your work in real settings, including a gig at a well-known London venue and a festival-style showcase, giving you direct experience of presenting your work to audiences in professional contexts. In the final year, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with students from film, animation, and games disciplines, reflecting the increasingly cross-disciplinary nature of music production and the expanding opportunities for musicians who can work in screen and interactive media. Graduates go on to careers as musicians, producers, songwriters, composers, music educators, and music industry professionals in areas such as management, publishing, A and R, and events. The London context is a significant asset, providing access to one of the world's most dynamic music scenes and a wide network of industry contacts. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in music, music production, or music technology to develop their practice or move into more specialised professional roles.
