About this course

Practical wildlife management is concerned with the hands-on skills and scientific understanding needed to manage wild animal populations, their habitats, and the complex human contexts in which they exist. It is a discipline that bridges ecology and conservation science on one side, and land management, countryside practices, and rural policy on the other. Effective wildlife management requires the ability to assess population dynamics and habitat condition, understand the legal and ethical frameworks that govern work with wild species, and apply practical skills in the field in ways that are grounded in evidence. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme places a strong emphasis on applied, field-based learning alongside the theoretical and scientific foundations of the discipline. You will study ecology, animal behaviour, habitat management, game management, pest control, and the legal context for wildlife work in the UK. Field skills including survey techniques, trapping and handling, and habitat assessment are central to the programme, reflecting its practical orientation. You will also engage with questions of land use, biodiversity, conservation policy, and the often competing interests of landowners, conservation bodies, and the public in debates about how wildlife should be managed.
