BA Primary Education with QTS
About this course
Primary school teaching is one of the most formative roles a professional can play, working with children during the years when intellectual curiosity, social confidence and foundational academic skills are established. Primary teachers need deep knowledge of how children develop and learn, a broad subject knowledge across the primary curriculum, and the practical skills to manage a classroom, plan effective lessons and assess children's progress accurately and fairly. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time degree leads directly to Qualified Teacher Status, the professional qualification required to teach in state-maintained primary schools in England, and is built around a combination of academic study and substantial school-based experience. You will study child development, curriculum theory and pedagogy, assessment for learning, the teaching of reading, writing, mathematics and other primary subjects, and the professional ethics, safeguarding responsibilities and legal frameworks that govern primary teaching in England. School placements run throughout the degree, progressively increasing in length and responsibility so that you develop your practical teaching competence alongside your academic understanding rather than encountering classroom teaching only at the end of your studies. Middlesex's programme is designed to be supportive and practical, ensuring that you emerge as a confident and effective beginning teacher. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates are qualified to take up teaching posts in primary schools across England, and the demand for qualified primary teachers is consistently strong. Career development paths include subject leadership, Special Educational Needs coordination, senior management and headship, as well as moves into advisory and consultancy roles, initial teacher training and educational research. The QTS qualification is also recognised in many other countries, giving primary teachers international career options.
