MEng Robotics, Autonomous and Interactive Systems
About this course
Robotics, autonomous and interactive systems is a discipline at the cutting edge of engineering and computer science, concerned with designing machines and software systems that can perceive their environment, make decisions and take action with varying degrees of independence. From industrial robots and autonomous vehicles to smart prosthetics and interactive installations, the applications of this field are transforming healthcare, manufacturing, transport, defence, entertainment and many other sectors. The engineering challenges involved are substantial, requiring expertise in control theory, sensing, actuation, machine learning, human-computer interaction and embedded systems. At Heriot-Watt University this five-year full-time programme provides an integrated MEng degree, combining the undergraduate and postgraduate levels into a single programme that takes you to a more advanced level of expertise than a three or four year degree alone. You will develop rigorous foundations in electronics, computing, mathematics and control engineering before specialising in robotics, autonomous systems, human-robot interaction and the software architectures that underpin intelligent machines. Heriot-Watt has a strong research reputation in robotics and intelligent systems, and the programme benefits from close connections to that research environment. A typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the programme's significant technical demands. Graduates are equipped for careers across the sectors where autonomous and robotic systems are being deployed, including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, defence, healthcare technology, energy and the technology industry. The MEng qualification and the depth of technical training provided over five years are particularly valued by employers looking for engineers capable of leading complex projects. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the relevant professional institution. Others move into research and development roles in industry or continue to doctoral research in robotics, autonomous systems, machine learning or human-robot interaction at leading institutions around the world.
