BSc Veterinary Nursing
About this course
Veterinary nursing is a demanding and rewarding profession at the heart of animal healthcare. Registered Veterinary Nurses work as skilled members of the veterinary team, supporting and assisting veterinary surgeons across a wide range of clinical tasks, from anaesthesia and surgical nursing through to diagnostic procedures, patient monitoring, and client communication. The role requires not only technical skill and scientific knowledge but also compassion, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. At Harper Adams University, the BSc in Veterinary Nursing runs over four years full-time and is designed to develop all of these qualities. You will study the anatomy, physiology, and clinical sciences underpinning animal health, and you will develop practical competencies in nursing care, anaesthesia, surgical assistance, pharmacy, and diagnostic imaging, among other areas. The programme prepares you to meet the assessment criteria set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the profession's regulatory body, and on completion you will be eligible to apply to join the RCVS register of veterinary nurses. Harper Adams has a strong reputation for animal and agricultural sciences, with dedicated facilities and strong links to the profession that enrich the learning environment. The programme covers small animal practice and may also draw on Harper Adams's particular strengths in farm and large animal settings, giving you a broader clinical perspective than many purely companion-animal-focused courses. Upon graduating and registering with the RCVS, you will be qualified to work as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in small animal practices, equine clinics, farm animal settings, referral hospitals, or specialist centres. Some graduates move into veterinary education, research, or leadership roles within practice management. The degree also provides a foundation for further study or advancement within the veterinary professions.
