BSc Web Development and Security (with integrated year in industry)
About this course
Web development and security address two of the most practically important aspects of modern computing. Web development is concerned with building the applications, platforms, and services that run on the internet, requiring skills in programming, interface design, databases, and the architectural decisions that determine how web systems function at scale. Security brings a different but complementary perspective, examining how systems can be attacked and compromised, and how they can be built and configured to resist those threats. As organisations of every kind depend ever more heavily on internet-facing systems, the ability to develop them securely is increasingly essential. This four-year, full-time programme at Aberystwyth includes an integrated year in industry, which gives you the opportunity to apply your technical skills in a real professional environment before graduating. You will study the internet and its implications for organisations, developing competence in web technologies, programming, server-side development, networking, and the security principles and practices needed to protect web systems from attack. The year in industry is woven into the programme rather than bolted on, and the experience typically deepens your technical understanding as well as your professional readiness. Graduates are well prepared for careers in web development, software engineering, cybersecurity, network administration, and digital infrastructure roles across a wide range of sectors. The security dimension of the degree is particularly valuable at a time when cyber threats are growing in sophistication and organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate robust information security practices. Many graduates work in roles that span development and security, precisely because few professionals can do both well. Further study in cybersecurity, computer science, or information security management is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
