About this course

Digital media and communication is concerned with how information, ideas and culture are created, shared and experienced in digital environments. It examines the platforms, technologies and practices through which digital communication operates, from social media and streaming services to podcasting, online journalism, content marketing and digital storytelling, and it develops the critical and practical skills to both understand and work within this landscape. As the media environment has shifted fundamentally towards digital, the need for people who can think analytically about these changes and operate effectively within them has grown significantly. At Aston University this four-year full-time programme combines the study of digital media with attention to communication as a discipline, developing your understanding of media production, audience research, communication theory, digital strategy and the social and cultural contexts in which digital media operate. You will engage critically with questions about how digital platforms shape public discourse, identity and culture, and you will develop practical skills in content creation, digital production, media analysis and communication strategy. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on digital media practice and the opportunity to study how different national media cultures operate in the same global digital environment. Graduates go on to work in digital marketing, content creation, broadcasting, journalism, public relations, corporate communications, social media management, media research and policy, and digital strategy. The combination of critical understanding and practical digital skills is valued by employers in media organisations, technology companies, marketing agencies, the public sector and cultural institutions. Many continue to postgraduate study in media, digital communications, journalism or marketing. The degree equips you to navigate a media landscape that continues to change rapidly, with the analytical grounding to understand why it changes and the practical skills to adapt.
