BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine Art is a discipline that develops your capacity to make original and meaningful work while also building the critical and theoretical knowledge that allows you to understand art in its widest contexts. It is not simply a technical training in studio skills, though those skills are foundational, but an education in how to think as an artist, how to develop your own practice with rigour and authenticity, and how to engage seriously with the history and contemporary landscape of art. At Robert Gordon University in Scotland, this four-year, full-time programme develops your skills across a range of disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and moving image, working with both analogue and digital methodologies. You will explore and combine these disciplines through creative investigation, developing a practice that is technically accomplished and conceptually grounded. The programme builds your critical aptitude alongside your creative skills, developing the professional understanding that allows you to position your work in relation to contemporary art discourse and to manage your practice in the real world. Four years allows for the depth of development that genuine artistic practice requires, moving through foundation skills to advanced work and professional preparation. Graduates of Fine Art pursue careers as practising artists, whether independently or in combination with other work in the creative industries. Many work in education, arts organisations, galleries, and museums, contributing to the creative and cultural life of their communities. Others move into related fields including illustration, graphic design, art direction, community arts, and arts administration. The critical, analytical, and problem-solving skills that fine art education develops are also valued in design, media, and communications roles. Postgraduate study in fine art, arts practice, or curatorial studies is a common path for those seeking advanced training or an academic career.
