BSc Paramedicine
About this course
Paramedicine sits at the sharp end of healthcare, bringing skilled clinical assessment and emergency care to people in crisis before they reach hospital. Paramedics are required to make rapid, high-stakes decisions in unpredictable environments, often with limited information and resources. The discipline has evolved considerably in recent decades and now demands a high level of clinical knowledge, encompassing pharmacology, pathophysiology, trauma care, and mental health, combined with the communication skills and composure to work effectively under pressure. At Robert Gordon University, the Paramedic Practice degree is delivered in collaboration with the Scottish Ambulance Service and regional territorial health boards, giving the programme a direct connection to the professional context in which you will eventually work. You will develop the clinical and practical skills that meet current and future demand in the profession, and the programme includes placements in remote and rural locations, reflecting Scotland's distinctive geography and the unique challenges it presents to emergency services. This exposure to a wide variety of settings, including environments where specialist support is not immediately available, builds a breadth of clinical experience that is highly valued in the profession. The programme runs full time over three years, with a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points. Graduates are qualified to work as registered paramedics with the Health and Care Professions Council, and employment opportunities exist with NHS ambulance services, the armed forces, private ambulance providers, events medicine, and offshore and remote medical services. The profession is developing quickly, with an expanding scope of practice that includes community paramedic roles and specialist practitioner pathways. Further study is available for those who wish to move into critical care, advanced clinical practice, education, or leadership roles.
