BSc Applied Mathematics/Pure Mathematics
About this course
Mathematics divides into pure and applied branches that are complementary rather than separate. Pure mathematics is concerned with abstract structures, proof and the rigorous development of mathematical ideas for their own sake, pursuing precision and logical completeness as ends in themselves. Applied mathematics takes the tools and techniques of mathematical analysis and deploys them to model and understand the physical world, from fluid dynamics and classical mechanics to probability and optimisation. Studying both develops a rare combination of abstract reasoning and practical problem-solving capability. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time programme allows you to engage with both dimensions of the discipline, building a thorough grounding in the techniques and ideas that underpin modern mathematics. You will study analysis, algebra, differential equations, numerical methods, mechanics and probability, developing the capacity to reason rigorously, construct proofs, manipulate formal systems and apply mathematical tools to a range of problems. The programme cultivates the habits of precise thinking, logical argument and creative problem solving that distinguish mathematics graduates in the job market. Mathematics graduates are in demand across an unusually wide range of careers, precisely because the skills the subject develops, rigorous quantitative reasoning, the capacity to work with abstract structures, and confidence with complex problems, are valued wherever organisations face difficult analytical challenges. Finance, actuarial science, data science, statistics, computing, engineering, operational research, teaching and research are all well-established graduate pathways. Many mathematics graduates also pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, financial mathematics, computing, physics or related disciplines, finding that the breadth of their undergraduate training provides a strong foundation for specialisation.
