BSc Biochemistry
About this course
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that occur within and between living organisms. It sits at the interface between biology and chemistry, using the tools of chemistry to understand how biological molecules work: how enzymes catalyse reactions, how DNA is replicated and genes are expressed, how cells generate energy, and how proteins fold into the three-dimensional shapes that determine their function. Biochemistry is fundamental to medicine, pharmacology, biotechnology, and our understanding of life at its most basic level, and it is one of the core disciplines of modern biology. At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of the fundamental principles of biochemistry, exploring the interface between biology and chemistry through a curriculum that combines teaching with extensive practical work in state-of-the-art facilities. You will study molecular biology, enzymology, metabolic biochemistry, structural biology, and the applications of biochemistry to human health and disease, developing both your theoretical understanding and your laboratory skills. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement, giving you professional research or industry experience and international scientific exposure. Entry typically requires around 104 UCAS tariff points. Biochemistry graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research, food science, agricultural science, government research agencies, and academic research institutions. The combination of strong laboratory skills with conceptual scientific understanding opens a broad range of career paths. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or related biomedical sciences, often with a view to research or clinical science careers.
