BEng Electronic Engineering
About this course
Electronic engineering is the discipline that designs the devices and systems that underpin virtually everything in the modern world. Smartphones, medical imaging equipment, satellite communications, electric vehicles, industrial automation, and the computing infrastructure of the internet all rest on the work of electronic engineers who understand how circuits, signals, and systems can be designed to perform reliably and efficiently. It is a discipline that combines mathematical rigour with practical creativity, demanding both the ability to analyse complex systems theoretically and the skill to design and build things that actually work. At King's College London this three-year full-time BEng programme offers a rigorous foundation in core principles, including foundational and advanced electronics, mathematics, and design thinking, combined with extensive hands-on experimentation and project work. You will develop your understanding of circuits, signals and systems, electromagnetics, digital electronics, embedded systems, and communications, building the technical knowledge that allows you to engage with the full breadth of what electronic engineering involves. The integrated approach empowers you to apply your knowledge in practical, impactful, and innovative ways, with project work giving you the experience of designing solutions to real engineering challenges. You will develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and design skills, alongside the ability to work effectively in teams and to communicate technical ideas clearly, all of which are essential in engineering practice. Graduates of electronic engineering programmes move into careers in telecommunications, semiconductor design, embedded systems, medical devices, defence electronics, renewable energy, and a wide range of other technology industries. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level is a route for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
