About this course
General engineering is a degree that deliberately avoids the narrow specialisation of most engineering programmes, instead developing your capability across the full breadth of engineering disciplines before you choose where to focus your professional career. It recognises that many of the most interesting and consequential engineering challenges sit at the boundaries between disciplines, requiring people who can think fluently across mechanical, electrical, civil, and systems engineering and who have the project management and problem-solving skills to bring different approaches to bear on complex real-world problems. At King's College London this three-year full-time programme aims to produce engineers of the future who want to make a real-world impact. You will develop skills and expertise across multiple engineering fields alongside essential problem-solving and project management capabilities. The programme is designed to prepare you for diverse and complex challenges in a workplace where adaptability and breadth of understanding are increasingly valued, particularly as new technologies bring different engineering disciplines into closer contact. Technology and digital infrastructure, aerospace, automotive, energy systems, defence, manufacturing, and consultancy all employ engineers with broad training who can engage across specialisms. Many graduates go on to specialise in specific engineering fields at postgraduate level or through professional development supported by employers, while others use the breadth of their training to move into project management, systems engineering, or technology strategy roles. Chartered Engineer status, pursued through one of the relevant professional engineering institutions, is an important milestone in many graduate careers.
