BSc Computer Science
About this course
Computer Science is the discipline that underpins the digital world: the systematic study of algorithms, data structures, programming, systems design, and the theoretical foundations that make computation possible. It encompasses both the abstract mathematical reasoning needed to understand what computers can and cannot do and the practical engineering skills required to build software and systems that work reliably in the real world. From artificial intelligence and data science to cybersecurity, networks, and human-computer interaction, computer science is one of the broadest and most rapidly evolving fields available to university students. At the University of Cumbria, this three-year, full-time BSc (Hons) combines a strong technical foundation with creativity, critical thinking, and awareness of the social and environmental impact of computing. You will develop expertise across software engineering, intelligent systems, network infrastructure, and ethical hacking, building practical skills through hands-on projects throughout all three years of the degree. The programme reflects the growing importance of areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, and immersive technologies, ensuring that what you study is aligned with the directions in which the field is developing and with the kinds of roles that employers in the sector are recruiting for. Computer science graduates are among the most employable of any discipline. Software development, data science, cybersecurity, systems analysis, artificial intelligence, and technology consultancy are all natural career directions, as are roles in research, public sector technology, and entrepreneurship. The technical rigour and problem-solving capability that the degree develops are valuable wherever digital systems are designed, built, or managed. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or related fields, for those who wish to specialise further.
