BA Film-making
About this course
Film-making is a creative and professional discipline concerned with the conception, development, production and distribution of films. It is simultaneously an art form and an industry, requiring its practitioners to work across creative, technical and commercial dimensions with equal facility. The director and producer roles are central to the course's conception, reflecting an understanding that effective film-making requires both the artistic vision to tell stories compellingly and the practical understanding of finance, production management and distribution that brings films from script to screen and audience. At Aberystwyth University's Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies you will study for three years full-time, gaining a practical insight into how the film business works and developing the skills needed to participate in it. You will explore the full process by which a film is conceived, financed, shot, delivered and exploited, understanding the long and complex pipeline of decisions, collaborations and technical processes that a film production involves. The programme combines creative and practical skills with an understanding of the industry structure within which those skills are deployed. Film-making graduates work as directors, producers, production managers, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, production designers and in a wide range of other crew and creative roles across film, television, online content and commercial production. Many graduates also work in independent film, short film production, documentary and experimental film alongside other work in the screen industries. Others move into film education, programming, distribution, sales and marketing or the business side of the industry. Postgraduate study in film production, screenwriting, documentary or screen studies is a natural route for those who want to develop their practice further or move into research and teaching.
