BA History
About this course
History is the discipline that seeks to understand the human past in all its complexity, examining how societies have changed over time, how events unfolded and were experienced differently by different people, and what the record of the past can tell us about the present. It develops the capacity to engage seriously with evidence, to construct well-reasoned arguments, and to appreciate that the world as it is today is the product of contingent choices and circumstances, not inevitable outcomes. History trains you to think for yourself, to work with ambiguity, and to communicate complex ideas clearly. At Teesside University, this full-time, three-year programme engages with a wide range of historical questions and periods. You will explore how different historical forces, including politics, culture, economy, and ideology, have shaped societies across time. The programme takes an engaged and contemporary approach to history, drawing on research expertise in areas including political history and cultural conflict to develop your analytical and research skills. The typical entry tariff is 72 UCAS points, making the programme accessible to students from a range of academic backgrounds who have a genuine interest in how the past has shaped the world. History graduates are employed across a remarkably wide range of careers, precisely because the skills of critical thinking, research, and communication that the discipline develops are valued in so many different contexts. Journalism, the civil service, law, teaching, heritage and archives, publishing, arts administration, business, and the third sector are all well-trodden paths for history graduates. The capacity to construct a coherent argument from complex evidence, and to understand how institutions and ideas develop over time, is relevant to almost any professional role where decision-making matters. Postgraduate study in history, education, public policy, or related fields provides a natural continuation for those who wish to go deeper.
