LLB Law
About this course
Law is one of the oldest and most demanding academic disciplines, concerned with the rules that govern human conduct, the institutions that interpret and enforce them, and the principles of justice and rights that underpin a legal order. A law degree develops your ability to read and analyse complex texts with precision, to construct and evaluate arguments rigorously, and to reason carefully about competing claims in a way that is both intellectually disciplined and practically grounded. These skills have value far beyond legal practice itself. At Abertay University this four-year full-time programme follows the Scottish law degree model, which leads to eligibility to qualify as a solicitor in Scotland through the Law Society of Scotland's professional training route. Scottish law has its own distinct character, shaped by a civil law tradition influenced by Roman law and continental Europe as well as by the English common law that has influenced it over centuries. You will study the core areas of Scots law, constitutional law, criminal law, and private law, developing a thorough understanding of the Scottish legal system and its relationship with the UK and European legal frameworks. A year abroad is available within the programme, allowing you to study law in a different national context and to develop comparative legal understanding. Graduates of the Abertay law programme have several career paths available. Many complete the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice and go on to qualify as solicitors, working in private practice, the public sector, or in-house legal roles. Others are called to the Scottish Bar. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are also valued in careers in compliance, regulatory affairs, finance, public administration, journalism, and many other professional fields. Postgraduate study in law, a specialist legal field, or an adjacent discipline is also a well-used route for Abertay law graduates.
