About this course

What competencies does the graduate have? The sea captain training prepares the student for Watch Officer Deck duties. After completing the studies and onboard training you can apply for a certificate of competency for Watch Officer Deck from the maritime authorities (Traficom), which is required in order to work in such positions. After completing the sea captain degree and having gained sufficient work experience as a Deck Officer, you will be able to apply for a certificate of competence as Master Mariner which gives you the competence for chief mate and commander positions. The objective of the programme is to train competent sea captains. The main tasks of a sea captain include being responsible for and manoeuvring a vessel, as well as transporting cargo in a way which is safe for both people and the environment. The programmeprovides competence for Deck Officer duties. The student becomes competent in navigation, seamanship, ship technology, maritime transport technology and maritime radio communication. Different projects completed in cooperation with the business community, for example in connection with the degree thesis, provide the possibility for networking and specialisation within the field. What kind of learning methods are used in the programme? Diverse teaching methods are utilised in the degree programme. In theoretical studies, lectures format is used when appropriate. To a large extent the studies take place in different digital learning environments and digital platforms. Distance learning methods are continuously developed , such as taking part in lectures virtually or watching recorded lectures. A significant portion of the studies consists of supervised onboard training on merchant ships and exercises in training simulators. What kind of career opportunities does the graduate have? Graduates of the degree programme are qualified captains for Finnish, European and international careers. The training also offers possibilities for working in leading positions in land-based organisations within the maritime field, such as shipbuilding, logistics, finance and the insurance sector.
