BA Animation
About this course
Animation is the art of bringing still images to life, creating the illusion of movement through the careful manipulation of drawings, models, digital assets, or photographic frames. It is a discipline that combines artistic skill with technical knowledge and storytelling intelligence, and it underpins a remarkably wide range of cultural products: feature films and short films, television programmes and advertising, video games and interactive media, corporate communications and medical visualisation. Great animation requires not just technical execution but a deep understanding of timing, character, performance, and the physics of the physical world. At Sheffield Hallam University this three-year, full-time BA programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich placement year, along with work placement opportunities throughout, giving you both a supported introduction to the discipline and sustained time working in professional animation environments before you graduate. The course is designed to develop your individual creative identity alongside your technical skills, encouraging you to embrace innovation and challenge expectations through industry-focused learning. You will work across a range of animation methods and contexts, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your abilities and showcases your distinctive creative voice. Graduates of animation work across the creative industries in roles including animator, character designer, visual development artist, storyboard artist, motion graphics designer, and art director. The film and television industries, games studios, advertising agencies, digital production companies, and broadcast organisations all employ animators. Many graduates work across multiple formats throughout their careers, combining client work with personal projects and exhibition. Some move into related areas such as visual effects, 3D modelling, creative direction, or animation education. The sandwich placement is a significant advantage in securing employment, and Sheffield Hallam's industry connections give the programme genuine professional relevance. Further study at Masters level is an option for those who want to develop a particular practice or move into research.
