About this course

Divinity is the serious academic study of religion in its doctrinal, historical, philosophical and textual dimensions. It is distinct from religious studies in its depth of engagement with primary theological texts and traditions, asking not just what people believe but how those beliefs have been argued for, challenged and refined over centuries of intellectual inquiry. It draws on ancient languages, philosophy, history and ethics to engage with questions that are among the most profound humanity has grappled with: the existence and nature of God, the basis of moral obligation, the meaning of religious experience and the interpretation of sacred texts. At the University of London, this programme is offered through distance learning, making it accessible to students who need to study flexibly around other commitments. You will engage with Christian theology in its historical and contemporary dimensions, study biblical texts using the tools of modern scholarship, encounter philosophical theology and philosophy of religion, and examine the relationship between faith, reason and culture. Distance learning in divinity typically involves working independently through well-structured materials, submitting written assignments and engaging with an academic community through online means and occasional contact with tutors. Graduates in divinity move into a wide range of careers. Ministry and pastoral work across Christian denominations is one obvious pathway, and the degree provides excellent preparation for ordination training and theological college. Others move into academic research and teaching, chaplaincy in schools, hospitals or prisons, education, journalism, the civil service and the third sector. The skills developed, in close reading of texts, philosophical argument, ethical reasoning and historical analysis, are valued across many fields. Further study at postgraduate level is also common, and many graduates go on to higher degrees in theology, religious studies, philosophy of religion or ethics.
