Because geology operates on timescales of millions to billions of years, it requires a particular kind of scientific imagination, the ability to read landscape and rock as a record of processes that no human being has ever directly observed. The discipline draws on chemistry, physics, and biology, making it genuinely integrative, and its applications range from resource extraction and hazard assessment to climate science and environmental management.
