BA History
About this course
History is the discipline that examines how the past has produced the present: how political decisions, social movements, cultural forces and economic changes have combined to shape the world we inhabit today. Studying history at degree level means developing the ability to evaluate evidence from primary sources, to weigh competing interpretations, to understand causation and contingency, and to communicate complex ideas with clarity and precision. These are capabilities that transfer remarkably well across professions, and history graduates are valued across an enormous range of sectors. At Teesside University, this part-time programme allows you to study history in a format that fits around other commitments, developing your historical knowledge and analytical skills over the course of your degree. You will engage with historical topics that speak to the contemporary world, including the political divisions of modern America, and develop critical frameworks for understanding how the past shapes present debates about power, identity, rights and governance. Part-time study provides access to a rigorous historical education for those whose circumstances make full-time study impractical, without compromising on the depth or quality of intellectual engagement. History graduates go on to careers in the civil service, journalism, publishing, law, education, heritage and museum work, broadcasting, the voluntary sector, politics and public affairs. The research and analytical skills a history degree develops are directly applicable in roles that involve evaluating complex information, communicating findings to different audiences and constructing well-reasoned arguments. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history, law, journalism, public policy or related fields, and the degree is a well-regarded preparation for further professional training.
