BSc Marketing
About this course
Marketing is the discipline concerned with understanding markets, customers, and competition, and with designing and communicating value propositions that attract and retain customers. It is not simply promotion or advertising, though those are part of it: marketing at degree level encompasses consumer psychology, market research, brand strategy, product development, pricing, distribution, digital media, and the analytical skills to evaluate whether marketing activity is working. In an economy where attention is scarce and consumers are increasingly sophisticated and sceptical, effective marketing requires both creative intelligence and rigorous analysis. At Aston University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving the degree an international dimension that reflects the genuinely global character of marketing practice. Many of the most significant brands and marketing campaigns operate across borders, and the year abroad develops both the cross-cultural sensitivity and the international perspective that effective marketing increasingly demands. Aston's business school has a strong reputation for applied, professionally oriented business education, and the marketing programme reflects that ethos with content that is closely connected to contemporary professional practice. You will study consumer behaviour, market research methods, brand management, digital marketing and social media, integrated marketing communications, pricing strategy, and international and cross-cultural marketing. You will also develop quantitative skills for analysing marketing data and evaluating campaign effectiveness, as modern marketing is increasingly driven by data as well as by creativity and insight. Presentation, teamwork, and the ability to develop and pitch creative strategies are skills developed alongside the analytical ones. Graduates in marketing work across the full range of sectors in roles spanning brand management, market research, digital marketing, advertising, account management, product management, and marketing analytics. The year abroad opens international career options and adds an international credential to the degree. Postgraduate study in marketing, digital marketing, or an MBA is a well-established route for those who want to deepen their expertise or move into senior marketing leadership.
