BEng Mechanical Engineering (+ Foundation year)
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineering disciplines, applying the principles of physics, mathematics and materials science to the design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems. From the engines that propel aircraft and the turbines that generate electricity to the precision components in medical devices and the structural systems of bridges and buildings, mechanical engineering shapes the physical world in almost every direction. At Harper Adams University this five-year programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry into engineering study before the main BEng begins. The foundation year develops the mathematical, scientific and academic skills you need to succeed in engineering study, building the confidence and knowledge base that makes the transition into degree-level work smoother and more effective. Across the remaining four years you will study the core of mechanical engineering, including thermodynamics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, materials, manufacturing processes and design, developing both analytical rigour and practical engineering judgment. Harper Adams has a distinctive agricultural and rural engineering heritage alongside its broader engineering provision, and the environment encourages a practical, problem-solving approach to engineering education. Mechanical engineering graduates are sought across a wide range of industries. Automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, food processing, agricultural machinery, medical devices and consultancy are among the most common sectors. Graduate roles in design, analysis, testing, project management and manufacturing engineering are all open to mechanical engineering graduates, and many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as a professional milestone. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study or research in areas such as sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, robotics or biomedical engineering, building on the broad foundation that the five-year programme provides.
