BEng Medical Engineering
About this course
Medical engineering, sometimes called biomedical engineering, applies the principles and methods of engineering to problems in medicine and healthcare. It draws on mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering alongside biology and physiology to design and develop devices, systems, and technologies that diagnose, treat, or monitor medical conditions. From diagnostic imaging equipment and surgical robots to prosthetics and biosensors, the field produces innovations that directly affect patient care and clinical outcomes. At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you to work at this intersection of engineering and medicine. You will develop as a competent classical engineer first, building solid foundations in engineering principles before applying them to medical contexts. You will study clinical instrumentation and devices, learning how the equipment used in hospitals and clinics is designed, built, and validated. Bioengineering and clinical engineering form central threads, exploring how biological systems can be modelled and how engineering systems can be safely and effectively integrated with the human body. The programme also prepares you to think about engineering challenges in contexts beyond medicine, developing the breadth that makes an engineer adaptable across different application areas. With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, this is a programme suited to students with strong scientific and mathematical preparation. Graduates from medical engineering programmes are sought by medical device companies, NHS technology and engineering departments, research institutions, and the broader medtech sector. Roles include medical device design, clinical engineering, regulatory affairs, research and development, and quality assurance. The combination of engineering rigour and medical context also prepares graduates for the rapidly growing fields of digital health and healthcare technology innovation. Postgraduate study in biomedical engineering, clinical science, or related engineering disciplines is a natural path for those wishing to specialise further or pursue academic research.
