Occupational Therapy is a health and social care profession that helps people engage in the everyday activities, or occupations, that give life meaning: working, caring for themselves, pursuing interests and participating in their communities. Occupational therapists work with individuals across all ages and a wide range of conditions, identifying the barriers that prevent people from doing what they need or want to do and developing creative, evidence-based interventions to enable greater independence, wellbeing and fulfilment. The profession requires both scientific knowledge of health, disability and development and the practical, interpersonal and creative skills to work effectively with individuals, families and communities in diverse settings. At York St John University, this part-time programme is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council, ensuring that your training meets the professional standards required for practice as an occupational therapist. Occupational Therapy graduates are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council on completion and work across the NHS, social services, mental health services, schools, prisons, the voluntary sector and private practice. Specialisms include physical rehabilitation, mental health, paediatrics, community practice, forensic occupational therapy and vocational rehabilitation.
