About this course

Theoretical physics asks the deepest questions about the nature of reality. While experimental physics tests hypotheses in the laboratory, theoretical physics develops the mathematical frameworks within which those experiments can be understood, and makes predictions about phenomena not yet accessible to experiment. From quantum field theory and general relativity to string theory, cosmology, and the physics of complex systems, theoretical physics operates at the boundary of human knowledge, using mathematics as its primary tool for understanding a universe that often turns out to be far stranger than intuition suggests. At the University of Exeter, you will study physics at one of the UK's leading research universities, developing the rigorous mathematical and analytical foundations that theoretical work requires. The programme runs for three years full time, with a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and integrated work placement opportunities, which is an unusually practical and internationally enriched structure for a programme at the cutting edge of theoretical science. The placement year gives you experience of applying your quantitative skills in a professional scientific or technical context, and the year abroad exposes you to physics research in a different national academic tradition. The typical entry tariff is 136 points. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, special and general relativity, quantum field theory, and advanced mathematical methods, developing a level of analytical sophistication that is directly applicable in research, technology, finance, and many other fields that require serious mathematical thinking. Graduates from theoretical physics programmes are exceptionally well placed for careers in academic research, quantitative finance, data science, software engineering, consultancy, and any role that draws on advanced mathematical and analytical skills. Many continue to doctoral research in physics, mathematics, or related fields.
