BA Visual Effects Arts
About this course
Visual Effects Arts is the discipline behind the images that make the impossible look real on screen. From the destruction of cities and the creation of fantastical creatures to the seamless augmentation of everyday scenes, VFX is the technology and craft that transforms what a camera captures into the final image audiences see. It is a field that sits at the intersection of art and computer science, requiring both creative vision and technical rigour, and it is central to the production of film, television, games, advertising, and virtual reality content. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme gives you hands-on training in the software tools and artistic techniques of professional VFX production. You will study compositing, 3D modelling and animation, motion tracking, digital matte painting, lighting and rendering, and the production pipelines through which effects shots are developed and delivered. The artistic dimensions of the discipline, including colour, composition, and the principles of animation, are developed alongside the technical competencies, reflecting the reality that VFX is always in service of a creative and narrative purpose. VFX graduates work in one of the most dynamic sectors of the creative economy. Film and television production companies, VFX studios, games developers, advertising agencies, and virtual reality companies all employ visual effects artists and technicians. Roles include compositor, 3D generalist, environment artist, lighting artist, and technical director. The industry is global, with major production centres in London, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and increasingly in other cities, giving graduates geographical flexibility. Many graduates build freelance careers working project by project. Postgraduate study in VFX, animation, or computer graphics is available for those who want to deepen their technical or artistic expertise.
