BSc Health Sciences
About this course
Health sciences is a broad, interdisciplinary field that draws on biology, social science, psychology, and public health to understand the factors that shape health and wellbeing across populations and individuals. It asks not just how the body works in health and in disease, but how social, behavioural, environmental, and policy factors interact to produce the patterns of health and illness we observe in society. It is a discipline that connects scientific rigour with a concern for the human and social dimensions of health, preparing graduates for professional roles across healthcare and public health. At Teesside University, this part-time programme gives you a grounding in the principles of health sciences alongside knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and the systems that regulate the body's functions. You will explore how homeostasis, the maintenance of stable biological conditions, operates across the body's major organ systems, and how disruption to these processes underlies many of the conditions encountered in healthcare practice. The part-time mode of study is designed for students who are balancing education with work or other commitments, allowing you to build a degree-level qualification over a longer period without giving up your other responsibilities. This makes the programme particularly well suited to those already working in health or care roles who want to develop their academic knowledge and professional qualifications alongside their practice. You will develop analytical and critical thinking skills alongside scientific knowledge, learning to evaluate health-related evidence and to apply it to real professional contexts. Graduates go on to careers across the health and social care sector, including roles in healthcare support, public health, health promotion, and administration in NHS and private settings. The degree also provides a foundation for further study in nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, or public health, enabling graduates to progress towards registered professional qualifications or postgraduate academic study in health-related fields.
