BA Photography
About this course
Photography is a discipline that fuses technical mastery with visual intelligence and critical thinking. Since its emergence in the nineteenth century it has become one of the most pervasive and influential forms of communication, shaping how we document reality, construct memory, and make meaning. Studying photography at degree level means developing not just craft skills in camera work, lighting, and digital processing, but also a serious engagement with the history, theory, and ethics of the image. At Wrexham University this three-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, giving you space to build introductory skills in design and critical analysis before the main course begins. You will develop creative problem-solving approaches and core research methodologies from the outset. Across the degree you will work across a range of photographic practices, from documentary and portrait work to fine art and experimental approaches, building a distinctive creative voice alongside technical competence. You will engage with the history of photography and with contemporary debates about image, representation, and digital culture. Graduates from photography programmes go on to careers as professional photographers working across editorial, commercial, fashion, documentary, and portrait sectors. Others move into art direction, photo editing, curation, gallery and museum work, digital content creation, and education. The analytical and visual skills developed through the degree also transfer well into advertising, design, and communications. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in fine art, documentary practice, or photographic theory, deepening their expertise and positioning themselves for research or specialist professional roles.
