FdSc Veterinary Nursing
About this course
Veterinary nursing is a healthcare profession dedicated to the clinical care of animals, working alongside veterinary surgeons to provide anaesthesia, surgical assistance, intensive care, diagnostic support, and patient management across a wide range of species. It is a discipline that combines scientific knowledge with hands-on practical skill and a genuine commitment to animal welfare, and it operates within a well-defined professional framework that requires both academic rigour and clinical competence. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time degree develops the knowledge and skills needed to work in the veterinary industry from the first year of study. In the early stages of the programme, you will build the underpinning scientific knowledge and core practical skills that are essential to veterinary nursing practice. The curriculum covers areas including animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, surgical nursing, diagnostic imaging, clinical nutrition, and the legal and ethical dimensions of veterinary care. You will also develop the communication skills needed to support clients and work effectively within veterinary teams. Clinical placement experience runs through the programme, giving you the direct hands-on experience with animals in clinical settings that qualification requires. Graduates from veterinary nursing programmes are eligible to register as veterinary nurses with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the recognised professional qualification in the UK. Careers span small animal practice, equine nursing, farm animal work, zoological and exotic animal settings, veterinary research, and the pharmaceutical and pet care industries. Many registered veterinary nurses go on to develop specialist expertise in areas such as anaesthesia, emergency care, dentistry, or oncology, and postgraduate study in veterinary nursing or clinical animal science is available for those who want to advance their practice or move into teaching and research.
