BSc Games Development
About this course
Games development sits at the intersection of computer science, software engineering, and creative design, bringing together programming expertise, artistic sensibility, and the kind of systems thinking needed to build interactive experiences that engage players and function reliably under demanding conditions. The games industry is one of the largest and most technically demanding sectors in the creative economy, and it increasingly provides tools, techniques, and talent to adjacent fields including film, simulation, training, and architecture. At Glasgow Caledonian University, this four-year full-time programme is built around practice from day one. You will build, experiment, and collaborate from the outset, combining creativity with technical skills using industry-standard tools. Whether you choose to focus on design or software development, you will develop a professional portfolio while working on real-world projects inspired by industry practice. The design strand develops your skills in game design, level design, user experience, visual narrative, and the creative systems that make games compelling. The software development strand goes deeper into the programming and systems engineering that bring games to life, including graphics programming, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, and network architecture. Across both strands, collaboration is central: games are made in teams, and the programme prepares you to work effectively with people whose expertise complements your own. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points, and the programme is studied full time. Graduates go on to careers in games studios, virtual reality development, simulation and training technology, film visual effects, and software engineering more broadly. Further study options include postgraduate programmes in games development, computer science, and interactive media.
