BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms that allow cells to function to the ecological systems that connect organisms across entire continents. It is a discipline of extraordinary breadth, encompassing genetics and evolution, physiology and anatomy, ecology and environmental science, microbiology, and the biological basis of health and disease. What unites these areas is a common commitment to understanding living systems through observation, experiment, and evidence-based reasoning. At Teesside University, this three-year, full-time Biology degree builds knowledge across the discipline's core areas, including the mechanisms of human physiology, the regulation of biological systems, and the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape life on Earth. You will explore how the body maintains homeostasis, how organ systems interact, and how biological understanding informs fields including medicine, forensic science, and environmental management. The degree includes a sandwich year and work placements, giving you the opportunity to apply your scientific training in professional settings and develop the practical experience that employers in biological and related sectors value highly. Biology graduates pursue careers across a very wide range of fields: biomedical research, environmental science, conservation, public health, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, healthcare science, education, and science communication are all accessible. The laboratory skills, data analysis capabilities, and scientific reasoning the degree develops are valued wherever rigorous investigation of natural systems is required. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in biology, ecology, genetics, physiology, or related biomedical sciences, or to professional training in healthcare, where a biology degree provides a strong scientific foundation.
