About this course

Building Surveying is the professional practice of assessing and advising on the condition, value and future of buildings. Building surveyors work across the full built environment, examining the pathology of structures, advising on refurbishment, restoration, repair, conservation and development, managing contracts, and ensuring that buildings meet the legal and quality standards that clients, regulators and occupants require. It is a discipline that combines technical knowledge of construction, materials and building physics with legal understanding and the client-facing communication skills that professional practice demands. At Roehampton University, this full-time three-year programme includes an optional foundation year and a sandwich placement year alongside work placement opportunities. You will study the professional activities, codes of conduct and stakeholder relationships that define practice in the architecture, engineering and construction industry, building both the technical and professional knowledge needed for a career in building surveying. The foundation year provides a supported entry route for students who need additional preparation, and the placement year gives you direct professional experience that connects your academic studies to industry practice. Building Surveying graduates are in consistent demand across the property, construction and real estate sectors. Roles include building surveyor, project manager, contract administrator, dilapidations specialist and conservation advisor, in private practice, local authorities, housing associations, commercial property companies and heritage organisations. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) pathway to chartered status is the principal professional route, and many graduates pursue this accreditation during their early careers. Postgraduate study and professional development opportunities are also available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise in particular areas of surveying practice.
