BSc Computer Science With Stem Foundation Year
About this course
Computer science is the discipline that underlies all of modern computing, encompassing the theory of computation, the design and analysis of algorithms, the engineering of software systems, and the application of computational thinking to problems across every field of human activity. It is a discipline in which foundations matter enormously: the formal methods, mathematical reasoning, and systematic problem-solving approaches that you develop as a computer scientist are the tools that allow you to understand, design, and build computing systems of any kind, regardless of how the technology itself changes. At Edge Hill University, this four-year, full-time programme includes an integrated STEM foundation year, which is designed for students who want to build the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for a computing degree before progressing into the main programme. The foundation year develops core quantitative, analytical, and subject-specific knowledge, preparing you to succeed in the computer science degree that follows. Over the main degree you will study programming, data structures and algorithms, software engineering, computer systems, and increasingly specialist topics as you develop your skills and interests. Graduates from computer science degrees find careers across virtually every sector of the economy. Software engineering, data engineering, systems architecture, machine learning, security, product development, and technology consulting are among the most common paths. The combination of strong technical foundations with problem-solving ability makes computer science graduates attractive to employers in technology companies, financial services, healthcare, media, manufacturing, and the public sector. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in computer science or a specialist area such as artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, or security.
