About this course

History is one of the core liberal arts, and its value lies not only in the knowledge it produces but in the habits of mind it cultivates. To study history seriously is to learn to interrogate evidence, to hold multiple explanations for events in tension, to understand that the present is always shaped by specific pasts that could have been otherwise, and to communicate complex arguments in clear, persuasive prose. These are skills with an unusually wide range of applications. At Coventry University, this part-time History degree invites you to be part of a discipline that is continually making discoveries and revising its own understanding of the past. You will engage with history through hands-on, project-based learning that builds skills alongside knowledge, treating historical study as an active process of enquiry rather than passive absorption of facts. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you opportunities to apply your developing skills in professional and international contexts across the duration of your study. These structural features are particularly valuable in demonstrating to future employers that your academic development has been matched by practical and intercultural experience. The careers available to history graduates are broad. Civil service roles, journalism, publishing, archiving, museum and heritage work, law, education, and policy research are among the most common. The ability to handle large volumes of complex information, to write clearly under pressure, and to construct evidence-based arguments makes history graduates attractive across almost any knowledge-intensive sector. Many also use the degree as preparation for postgraduate study in history, archives, museum studies, heritage management, or a professional qualification such as a law conversion or teacher training programme.
