About this course

What will a graduate know and be able to do?The Degree Program in Automotive Engineering provides students with diverse competences in mechanical and automotive engineering, including knowledge of electrical engineering relevant to the rapid electrification of vehicles. Students learn to design automotive components and to operate the equipment and systems used in their production. They gain expertise in vehicle structures, components, and systems, as well as in manufacturing methods, engine operation, vehicle dynamics, and diagnostics. In addition, students develop skills in automotive aftermarket services, including maintenance and repair. These areas also involve understanding business operations, workshop processes, and customer service. Depending on the university of applied sciences, students may specialize in fields such as automotive electrical engineering, vehicle design, aftermarket services, transport technology, vehicle inspection, or intelligent work machines. The program also includes a strong foundation in natural sciences and mechanical engineering, covering topics from statics and strength of materials to machine design, computer-aided design (CAD), and materials engineering. What kind of teaching methods are used in the program? The studies are practice-oriented and aligned with the skills and needs of working life. Alongside theoretical instruction, a significant part of learning takes place in laboratories. In addition to traditional classroom teaching, students work in teams and projects and complete online studies. During internships, students can focus their learning according to their individual competence goals. Studies may also include international student exchange periods. What kind of positions and organizations do graduates work in?Graduates can pursue a wide range of careers in the automotive industry, vehicle import and export, and the automotive aftermarket both in Finland and abroad. Typical tasks include product development, mechanical design, research, workshop operations, logistics, production, sales and marketing, or education. There are also opportunities in service production, with roles related to digitalization, advanced materials, the industrial internet, and smart solutions for industry and mobile machinery.
