BSc Biochemistry
About this course
Biochemistry is the science of life at the molecular level. It examines how biological molecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, are structured, how they function, and how they interact to carry out the processes that sustain living organisms. From the mechanisms of enzyme catalysis and gene expression to the molecular basis of disease and the design of new therapeutic agents, biochemistry is fundamental to our understanding of biology and medicine, and to the development of technologies that improve health and address global challenges. At Aston University in Birmingham, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will explore the molecular architecture of proteins and nucleic acids, the biochemical pathways of metabolism, cell signalling, and gene regulation, and the emerging technologies that are transforming how we study and engineer living systems. Areas such as synthetic biology and drug discovery reflect the current frontiers of the field, and the programme engages with innovative techniques like organ-on-a-chip that are reshaping how we model biological systems and test potential therapeutics. Laboratory work is central to your development as a biochemist, building the practical skills that research and industrial careers depend on. The sandwich year and year abroad give you professional and international experience that enhances your employability and broadens your scientific perspective. Biochemistry graduates from Aston move into careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research and development, clinical research, quality control, regulatory science, and the growing field of biomedical technology. Many pursue postgraduate research in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, or related disciplines, building towards academic or industrial scientific careers. The combination of deep molecular understanding, practical laboratory skill, and professional experience the degree provides is a strong foundation for a career at the cutting edge of the life sciences.
