BA History
About this course
History is the discipline through which human beings attempt to understand and explain their past, reconstructing events, conditions, and experiences from surviving evidence and asking what they meant to those who lived through them. It is a fundamentally interpretive field, in which the same events can be read differently by historians working from different questions, methodologies, and perspectives, and in which the meaning of the past is never settled once and for all. This quality, far from being a weakness, is what makes history intellectually vital and continuously relevant to the present. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year, full-time degree combines a passion for learning about the past with the development of skills that equip you for a successful future. You will engage with the breadth of the historical record across different periods and geographies, from medieval social history and early modern European dynasties to the catastrophic conflicts of the twentieth century. The programme develops your ability to locate and evaluate primary sources, construct well-evidenced arguments, and communicate your findings with precision and clarity. Welsh and British history forms a distinctive strand of the programme, reflecting Aberystwyth's location and the richness of the Welsh historical record. History graduates develop capabilities that transfer across a remarkably wide range of careers: the ability to research thoroughly, reason carefully, and write clearly is valued in law, journalism, the civil service, the heritage sector, education, publishing, politics, and the arts. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study, including teacher training, archival and library work, and academic research. Whatever direction you choose, a degree in History equips you with a deep understanding of how the world came to be as it is and the intellectual tools to navigate its future.
