About this course

Education Studies is an academic discipline that examines education as a social, political, cultural, and institutional phenomenon. Rather than training you to teach, it asks deeper questions: how do educational systems reproduce or challenge inequality, what are the purposes of schooling in different societies, how do theories of learning translate into classroom practice, and what role do policy and politics play in shaping what gets taught and to whom? It is a field that develops critical thinking about one of the most important institutions in any society. At Wrexham University, this part-time programme includes a foundation level that builds the academic foundations you need to study at degree level, offering a supported entry route particularly well suited to mature students and those returning to education. You will begin by developing your skills as a degree-level student and undertaking a six-week placement that grounds the academic content in real educational settings. As you progress through the programme, you will study child development, educational psychology, theories of learning, curriculum, policy, and the social contexts that shape educational experience, including questions of inclusion, diversity, and equity. Studying part-time allows you to pursue the degree alongside work or other commitments, and the placement experiences woven into the programme give you direct contact with educational environments that bring the academic material to life. Graduates of Education Studies move into a wide range of careers. Teaching remains a common destination, often following postgraduate teacher training, and the degree provides a strong academic foundation for that route. Other graduates work in early years provision, community education, educational administration, learning and development roles in organisations, youth work, social work, and the charitable sector. Research in education, educational policy, and related postgraduate study are also well-established pathways from this degree.
