BA Visual Communication
About this course
Visual communication is the practice of conveying ideas, information, and meaning through visual means: through graphic design, illustration, typography, branding, digital media, motion graphics, and the many hybrid forms that characterise contemporary creative practice. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of artistic sensitivity and practical problem-solving, asking how visual choices, from the selection of a typeface to the composition of an image, affect how a message is received. Effective visual communicators understand both what looks right and why it works. At Leeds Arts University, one of the UK's specialist higher education institutions for art and design, this three-year full-time programme takes a multidisciplinary approach, giving you the space to explore a breadth of creative sectors and to pursue your own interests within the broad field of visual communication. You will develop skills in graphic design, illustration, typography, image-making, and digital communication, alongside the theoretical and critical understanding to contextualise your work within the history and contemporary landscape of visual culture. The programme involves direct work with industry, giving you real-world briefs and professional experience that connect your academic development to the marketplace. Graduates from visual communication programmes go on to work as graphic designers, illustrators, art directors, brand designers, UI and UX designers, motion graphics artists, and creative practitioners across the advertising, publishing, digital media, and creative agency sectors. Leeds Arts University's specialist environment and its location in a city with a vibrant creative economy provide strong foundations for career entry. Many graduates build freelance or studio-based practices, while others find employment with design agencies, in-house creative teams, or cultural organisations. Further study at postgraduate level in design or visual communication is also an option for those who want to specialise.
