BEng Building Services Engineering
About this course
Building services engineering is the discipline responsible for the mechanical, electrical, and environmental systems that make buildings function: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical supply, lighting, water systems, and the increasingly important integration of renewable energy and smart building technologies. As buildings account for a significant proportion of global energy use, and as the built environment faces pressure to reduce its carbon footprint dramatically, building services engineers are central to designing the sustainable, high-performance buildings of the future. At Glasgow Caledonian University, this four-year programme has been developed in direct partnership with the building services industry, ensuring that the curriculum reflects the skills and knowledge that employers actually need. You will study heating and air conditioning system design, building performance simulation and assessment, electrical systems, and lighting design, developing both the technical understanding and the computational tools to model and evaluate building systems. The programme equips you to work at the intersection of mechanical and electrical engineering and environmental science, developing the kind of integrated systems thinking that complex building projects require. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates of building services engineering programmes work in consulting engineering practices, construction companies, facilities management organisations, and public sector bodies managing large building portfolios. Roles in HVAC design, electrical engineering, sustainability consulting, and project management are all common destinations. The degree provides a strong foundation for professional membership of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), and many graduates progress towards chartered engineer status. The shift to net-zero buildings is creating sustained demand for graduates with this combination of technical and environmental expertise.
