LLB Law
About this course
Law is one of the most intellectually rigorous and professionally consequential disciplines in higher education. It trains you to read texts with extraordinary precision, to construct arguments from evidence and principle, to identify the relevant rule and apply it to specific facts, and to think carefully about justice, rights, and the organisation of social life. Law governs almost every aspect of human activity, and the ability to understand and work with legal rules is valuable across an enormous range of careers, not only in the legal profession. This three-year full-time programme at Aston University includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most professionally and internationally structured law programmes available. Aston's location in Birmingham puts you close to one of the UK's most vibrant legal markets, with a large number of law firms, courts, and legal aid organisations within easy reach. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, public law, criminal law, land law, equity, and European and international dimensions of the legal system, alongside the skills of legal research, analysis, and advocacy that the profession demands. The sandwich year and placement give you direct professional experience, while the year abroad provides an international legal perspective. Law graduates from Aston pursue professional legal training through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or the Bar Training Course for those who wish to practise, and the professional experience embedded in the programme provides a strong platform for this. Many graduates also pursue careers in business, finance, public policy, compliance, HR, and other fields where legal knowledge is valued without requiring full qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Postgraduate options include the LLM, specialist legal master's degrees, and academic legal research.
