BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences
About this course
Sport and Exercise Science is the scientific study of how the human body performs and adapts under the demands of sport and physical activity. It draws together physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to build a rigorous evidence base for understanding physical performance, optimising training, preventing injury, and promoting health through exercise. As both elite sport and public health have come to rely increasingly on scientific insight, the knowledge and analytical skills that sport and exercise scientists develop are in growing demand across a wide range of professional contexts. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme with a foundation year is taught by experienced applied practitioners and researchers who bring practical expertise across sport psychology, physiology, analysis and coaching into the curriculum. The foundation year provides additional preparation for students who benefit from extra scientific grounding before the main degree, and the programme as a whole develops your understanding of physiology, biomechanics, research methods, psychology, and the applied contexts in which these disciplines are used. You will engage with both laboratory-based scientific work and applied fieldwork, developing the practical skills alongside the theoretical knowledge that employers in the sport and exercise sector need. Graduates of Sport and Exercise Science programmes work in performance analysis, strength and conditioning, sport science support for clubs and national programmes, exercise physiology and health promotion, physical activity in clinical contexts, sport development, and coaching. Many pursue postgraduate study in sport and exercise science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, or public health, some achieving chartered status with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. The breadth of careers open to sport and exercise science graduates reflects the growing role that scientific evidence plays in sport, health, and physical activity across all levels and populations.
