About this course

Forensic science is the application of scientific knowledge and methods to questions of law. It draws on chemistry, biology, physics, and an understanding of criminal justice to analyse physical evidence gathered from crime scenes, and to present that analysis in ways that can withstand legal scrutiny. From DNA profiling and toxicology to fingerprint analysis and digital forensics, the field has become central to modern criminal investigation, and skilled forensic scientists are in demand in police services, laboratories, and courts around the world. At Wrexham University, this programme is studied part-time and includes a foundation year, which provides a grounding in the scientific and legal fundamentals before you progress into the more advanced stages of the degree. The foundation year introduces crime scene investigation, laboratory techniques, and the legal frameworks within which forensic evidence is gathered and presented. You will learn to handle forensic evidence correctly, interpret chemical and biological data, and apply the statistical reasoning that underpins reliable scientific conclusions. Part-time study gives you the flexibility to progress at a manageable pace while balancing other commitments, and the programme has been designed with that in mind. As the degree develops you will explore more specialist areas of forensic science, deepening your laboratory skills and your understanding of how forensic evidence informs the criminal justice process. Throughout, you will develop the precision, rigour, and ability to communicate scientific findings clearly that employers in forensic and analytical roles consistently require. Graduates go on to work in forensic laboratories, police services, the criminal justice system, environmental and public health agencies, and scientific consultancy. Some pursue further study or professional training in specialist areas of forensic science, analytical chemistry, or forensic pathology.
