BSc Software Engineering
About this course
Software engineering is the disciplined application of engineering principles to the creation of software systems that are reliable, efficient, maintainable, and fit for purpose. As digital technologies permeate every sector of the economy, the demand for engineers who can build, test, and maintain complex software at scale has become one of the most consistent features of the graduate job market. Software engineering is distinct from programming alone: it encompasses the whole lifecycle of software development, from requirements analysis and design through to testing, deployment, and maintenance, with an emphasis on the professional processes and collaborative practices that large-scale development requires. At Leeds Beckett University, you will study software engineering over three years full-time, mastering the skills of software development, system design, testing, and project management. You will work with a range of programming languages and development environments, and engage with both the theoretical foundations of computing and the practical challenges of building systems that work reliably in real conditions. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement provision, giving you substantial professional experience and an international dimension before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Software engineering graduates are in high and consistent demand across the technology sector and well beyond it. Development roles in software houses, financial technology, healthcare technology, defence, gaming, digital media, retail technology, and the public sector are all accessible, and many graduates move into systems architecture, DevOps, product management, or technical leadership roles as their careers develop. Many also continue to postgraduate study in software engineering, computer science, or related disciplines, building specialist expertise in areas such as security, artificial intelligence, or cloud computing.
